We do more than just carpets, too!

4 Nov

Here are a couple of photos we took at a dance and music studio we were working on last week. The wooden flooring, as you can tell from the before photo, was in dire need of a good polish~ the wood was in excellent condition but really wasn’t being “all it could be.”

After stripping back the old polish and giving the floor a good clean and prep, we applied a fresh, new polish. It’s a lot of work, and takes time and devotion to get it right~ but this is something we’ve been doing for over 10 years now! I have maintained great working relationships with our suppliers, so Mr Carpet Cleaner is fortunate to be kept in the loop when new technologies emerge in our industry.

We've just given the stripped back floor a good clean, and are waiting for it to dry.

The final coat of polish is drying~ our work is done!

I’m sure you’ll agree, the improvement is tenfold! Let us know what you think~ we’d love to post more before and afters if anyone is interested.

Quick advice for dealing with stains

2 Nov

We’ve had double the usual enquiries for stain removal in these past few weeks. One thing we are finding more and more of is that people are waiting to get the stain treated until they are ready to move out. It’s not unheard of for us to get a phonecall about stain removal for marks that have been there for over 2 years! We try our hardest to get the best results possible, but sometimes after that length of time, there isn’t a lot we can do~ even with 12 years of experience.

I thought I’d put some quick tips up for everyone, just to try and make things easier when it comes time to sell/vacate/re-tenant your place~

  1. For food spills, or any type of solid matter, pick up as much as you can, using a clean paper towel or cloth.
  2. Don’t rub it in! You want to limit the amount of spillage absorbed into the carpet fibers (this is actually why carpet protector is such a great idea)
  3. Call a professional! We have years of experience and a whole arsenal of professional grade products to help you.
  4. Avoid using cheap products or at-home solutions. They are often heavily diluted or not at all tailored to the stain you have, and can sometimes make the situation worse.
  5. If days/weeks/months/years (!) have passed since the stain occurred, get us in for an obligation-free, in-home assessment- our technicians will give you free and honest advice about what can be done with the marks on your carpets.

I hope this helps, and look forward to hearing from you if you have any other questions.

Why do we insist on pre-spotting your carpets?

28 Sep

Ok, so in the above photo it’s pretty obvious why anyone would insist on pre-spotting the carpets… but in a lot of cases our clients will insist that we don’t need to bother. The reason why we pre-spot before we shampoo the carpets is threefold:

  1. To loosen the soils in the carpets, and give us a bit of a ‘headstart’ in getting them looking their best again.
  2. To insure our product has time to settle in areas that are notoriously dirty- passageways, entrance foyers, under the dining room table. When we’ve finished cleaning your carpets, we don’t just want it cleaner- we want it clean!
  3. Last but not least, we do it because that’s what we said we’d do! By training our whole team to use the same tried and true process from start to finish, we can ensure that our results are impressive across the city.

Dealing with pet urine in your carpets

15 Sep

We’ve had a lot of enquiries in recent weeks about how to remove pet urine in carpets. A lot of our clients (kind, considerate people that they are!) let their pets inside more over the chilly winter months~ meaning there is a bigger chance of accidents. Here, I’ll try to answer the 2 most common questions I get asked.

How easy is it to remove pet urine stains from carpet?

Most of the time we have great success in removing pet urine stains. However, it’s important to note that there are 2 crucial things that can affect how easy/difficult pet urine can be to remove.

  • Have you attempted to treat the stain with an at-home remedy or supermarket product? Either method can ‘set’ the stain, and make treatment more difficult.
  • How long has the stain been there? If you call us as soon as you notice the stain, you’ve already given your chances of effective stain removal a huge boost! Left to it’s own devices for too long, urine becomes an alkaline substance when it dries. Alkalines can change the dye structure of your carpets and cause the fibres to deteriorate. If this happens, stain treatment is no longer required. Re-dying the carpet may be the only option.

What can be done about urine odour?

A(nother) great thing about our carpet cleaning method is it’s built-in deodoriser. Encapsulation cuts odour causing bacteria off from its food supply, meaning it has little chance to breed. This, combined with a thorough and efficient stain treatment means we can normally get rid of nasty odours. It’s important to mention though, that although we normally have a very good success rate, we cannot offer any guarantee on urine stain treatment, because we simply don’t know what has gone on with the stain before we get there.

What do you recommend people do?

I have a few recommendations which have helped us see our clients through:

  • When you are getting your carpets treated for pet urine odours, consider having the drapes and upholstery done, too. It’s also a good idea to give your walls and skirting boards a thorough wipe down also (if it’s safe to do so!)
  • Call a professional as soon as you notice a urine stain- most pets will continue to ‘go’ in the same area. Remember that pet urine is damaging to your carpets, the underlay, and the floorboards below them, if left too long.
  • Try to keep Ginger or Fido away from that area- block it off if necessary, and pay attention to the signals your pet gives that it’s ‘time.’ If they have been urinating in the same spot of carpet regularly, chances are they will hold on until that spot is available… if it’s no longer an option, you need to offer them a better one.

Hopefully this will help keep your freshly Spring Cleaned home looking (and smelling) the way it should… at least until the kids get home!

Healthier, cleaner Auckland carpets…

Puppy on a clean carpet

Carpets add warmth and comfort to your home, but if they aren’t cared for correctly, they can also add bacteria, mildew and bugs! But there is an easy way to make sure your carpets stay healthy, clean and safe for your family:

  • Have a Professional Carpet Cleaning company clean them for you every 6-8 months~ remembering to look for a company that offers family- and environmentally- safe products, quick drying times, and built in anti microbial protection.
  • Have the carpets protected~ this shouldn’t be too costly, it makes your carpets easier to clean, and can significantly reduce the wear and tear on your carpet.
  • Don’t wait too long if you have a leak or minor flood disaster~ the longer your carpets stay wet, the higher the chances of mould and mildew spores multiplying in your carpets, aggravating allergies, asthma, and damaging prized posessions.
  • If you have pets in your home, keep their flea treatments up to date~ with some of the better treatments, fleas start to die within 3 minutes of application, meaning they are unable to lay eggs in your carpets. Left untreated, fleas can multiply at an alarming rate.

What is encapsulation?

8 Sep

Encapsulation solutions, quite simply, are “oil loving” formulas that easily bind to oils, dirt, grime and greasy residues. When the solution is agitated into the carpet (whether by brush, rotational buffer or bonnet system) the soils and dirt are broken up, giving the encapsulation solution a perfect opportunity to bind to the soils. ..

As it begins to dry, it encapsulates the soil and hardens, forming crystals that can then be removed from the carpet with a vacuum cleaner or by pile lifting.

The first benefit of carpet cleaning using the encapsulation method is that little residue is left behind (if any residue is left behind, it is residual solution which continues to act on new soils in the carpet, and will be picked up the next time your home is vacuumed.)

Bacteria need food to grow. When these bacteria, like the rest of the soils in your carpet, are encapsulated and crystalised, they become separated from their food source~ causing them to die.

The second benefit of encapsulation cleaning is that not only do bacteria not get a chance to breed (it takes 4 hours for mould and mildew to grow in wet carpet~ they cannot accomplish anything in 20-40 minutes!) the bacteria already in your carpets dies, too!

Encapsulation solution is fast drying. That’s why when we claim:

Your carpets dry, before we say ‘goodbye!’

We can say it with our heads held high! Normally, within 30-40 minutes of the encapsulation solution being applied, your carpets are dry to walk on.

The third benefit of encapsulation cleaning is that with less water, comes less “wicking” (the reappearance of stains that have lain dormant in the base fibres, underlay or backing of the carpet) and better air quality.

Finally, this new generation of encapsulation cleaners literally strip the oils and residues from your carpet fibres, leaving them in almost the same state they were when you bought the carpet. Anyone who has replaced their carpet knows how much easier it is to vacuum dirt from your new carpet.

The fourth benefit of encapsulation cleaning is that not only do your carpets stay clean longer, they remain easier to clean for yourself in between visits from a professional carpet cleaner!

In essence, encapsulation cleaning is the simple and effective way to clean your carpets. Now that you know how it’s done, you can make an informed decision when it comes time to clean your carpets. If you’d like any more information, please give us a call~ we’re happy to help!

Carpet cleaning for a healthier home…

6 Sep

For a lot of Auckland locals, our Tenancy Agreement states that we must have the carpets cleaned by a professional Auckland carpet cleaner when we vacate the property… and that is the first time we even consider cleaning our carpets.

But did you know that cleaning your carpets can give you a healthier home? It’s true! Choosing the right Carpet Cleaning company in Auckland can allow you the benefits of a healthier home, whilst you’re still living in it. How? Well, the answer to that is threefold:

If your carpet cleaning technician uses a built-in anti-microbial treatment… nasty spores and bacteria are history!

If the method of carpet cleaning is quick drying… there is no chance for mould and mildew to breed in your carpets.

If the Carpet Cleaning company you choose uses safer, environmentally friendly products from a reputable “green” manufacturer… you don’t have nasty, toxic chemicals lurking in the carpets you live on.

Mr Carpet Cleaner is proud to meet all these requirements… make sure the company you choose is, too.
